Thinner wires, like 18-gauge, can also be used, but this size is typically used for lower-powered appliances and not so much for speakers. So, once you figure out the impedance (measured by Ohms), you can adequately estimate what wire you’ll need. Toddler Schedule: Can Toddlers Sleep Through the Night? But of course, there are now a much wider variety of styles to choose from, including striking modern clocks that look more like abstract sculptures than timepieces. Traditional clocks can still be bought and are a popular souvenir. Over the centuries since it first emerged from the Black Forest, the cuckoo clock has remained largely unchanged. At such a time it is peculiarly grateful for it seems to assure us that indeed, winter is past. But more especially when, for the first time in the season, it is heard in a lovely Spring morning, mellowed by distance, borne softly from some thick tree, whose tender, and yellow-green leaves, but half-opened, are as yet barely sufficient to afford the welcome stranger the concealment he loves. There are few who do not feel a thrill of pleasure when it falls upon their ear. Writing eloquently on the cuckoo in his 1849 book Natural History: Birds, English naturalist Philip Henry Gosse described the joy felt upon hearing the first coos of the season: So why a cuckoo? The common cuckoo, native to Europe, had long served as a natural marker of time, a welcome harbinger of Spring whose familiar calls denoted the coming of the new season and warmer weather. After a century of development that saw wood replaced with brass and metal, two distinct styles of cuckoo clock emerged from the Black Forest to dominate the market: The ornamented, house-like “Bahnhäusleuhr” or “railroad house” and the Jagdstück” or “Hunt piece” or “traditional style” clock, which features elaborate, decorative hand carved nature scenes adorning a simple encasement.Įngraving of a common cuckoo (image: Natural History: Birds) ![]() Clocks that play music in addition to chirping will have a third weight. One weight, along with the pendulum, is dedicated to keeping the clock gears running while the other weight controls the avian automoton. The gears of these traditional cuckoo clocks are regulated by a pendulum and system of two or three weights, traditionally shaped like pinecones, that steadily drop over a period of one day or eight days, depending on the model of the clock. In traditional cuckoo clocks, the “coo coo” sound is derived from a system of bellows pushing air through two wooden whistles to recreate the distinctive two-note call of the common cuckoo. In any case, the familiar cuckoo clock that we know and love today, the clock that hangs in our grandparents’ houses, was certainly developed and refined by the talented craftsman and clockmakers of the Black Forest. While the full origins of the cuckoo clock remain unknown, evidence dates similar, though more primitive, objects to at least the mid 17th century – around 100 years before Ketterer’s supposed invention. For such an iconic timepiece, there is surprisingly little written about the cuckoo clock, but, as recently noted by the National Association of Watch & Clock Collectors, modern scholarship does not support the Ketterer theory. This oft-cited theory first emerged in a relatively popular 1979 self-published book The Black Forest Cuckoo Clock. ![]() It was believed that Ketterer created the cuckoo in the 1730s, inspired by the bellows of church organs to adapt the technology in lieu of the chimes then typically used in clocks. ![]() I use the word “likely” because the origins of the cuckoo clock are unclear and its invention is still a topic of debate among horologists.Īn early Black Forest cuckoo clock, circa 1870 (image: wikimedia commons)įor a long time, the cuckoo clock was attributed to Franz Anton Ketterer, a clockmaker of some repute from the Black Forest village of Schönwald. “When the film came out,” he told Peter Bogdanovich, “the Swiss very nicely pointed out to me that they’ve never made any cuckoo clocks!” Indeed, although often associated with Switzerland, the cuckoo clock was more likely invented in Germany sometime in the 17th century. And though he may have been a genius, Welles was wrong about the history of the Cuckoo clock. So says Orson Welles as Harry Lime in the 1949 film The Third Man. Welles added those lines himself to a script based on Graham Greene’s original story. In Switzerland, they had brotherly love – they had 500 years of democracy and peace, and what did that produce? The cuckoo clock.” “Like the fella says, in Italy for 30 years under the Borgias they had warfare, terror, murder, and bloodshed, but they produced Michelangelo, Leonardo da Vinci, and the Renaissance. ![]() Unfortunately Sequel Pro doesn’t support that, however, as I said, it offers the possibility of writing your own “bundle” (effectively a plugin). Redmine supports wiki text - and this is where HeidiSQL came in handy as you could select a few rows of data and it allowed you to copy that to clipboard as wiki text/table so you could then just paste it into Redmine and have the data formatted and therefore easy to read. (saves me running the same SELECT over and over again every time I need to check a campaign flag for instance). In Cognitive Match we use Redmine internally as our task tracking system, and when dealing with production investigation, I found myself quite often having to copy and paste rows of data from MySQL into Redmine - either so data can be investigated/approved by colleagues, or simply as an effective way of “saving to stack” row ID’s, campaign settings etc. Now that I found to be cool because I don’t want to learn a new scripting/programming language for each product which allows me to write my own plugins. One of the good things I found about it, is it offers a plugin framework ( bundles) which allows you to write your own bundles - and even better, these can be written in Bash script, or, any other scripting language you can shebang from bash. I have to admit it doesn’t yet rival with HeidiSQL but like all the open-source projects, they had to start somewhere so a bit of patience is required. So digging around I found this open source (hence free) client called Sequel Pro. You can of course use the MySQL Workbench but I found it clunky and not that helpful to be honest. Some of you might know that I’ve moved to Mac recently (no comment!) - as such I had to ditch the HeidiSQL client for MySQL (booo! why does it only run on Windows?) and had to figure out another handy MySQL client which works on Mac OS X. Sequel Ace is available in the Apple App store, and is the new database management tool, maintained by developers from Sequel Pro. RIP, Sequel Pro… and welcome to Sequel Ace! It won’t work, and since it is not being actively developed, will never work on Big Sur. However, by far the biggest issue (for me) is the lowly ‘Sequel Pro’ software I’ve been using for years to access databases on different servers. The code doesn’t exist to allow Windows to run on the M1 chip. The main one being anything ‘Microsoft’ now won’t work – for example, running VMWare and having a Windows virtual machine just isn’t happening right now. Yes, it’s a lovely piece of silicon, and is a good deal faster to use in day to day operations than the older Intel designed chip, but of course has introduced a few snags. This is further compounded by moving off Intel chips to the new Apple M1 chip. I upgraded my OS to Big Sur and as expected a number of issues arose due to incompatible software. ![]() For now it's mostly helpful to get down to depth quickly, but we use it more and more often as we go deeper.
